Using Canvas

To access Canvas through the New School: canvas.newschool.edu.

Canvas is the learning management system (LMS) we use to build online courses. It's easy to learn and even easier to use.

If you're new to online learning or haven't yet been introduced to Canvas, contact Distributed Education or schedule an appointment to get on-boarded.

How can I access Canvas and view my courses?

- Login to MyNewSchool at http://my.newschool.edu

- On the top-right side of the page, click on the 3 horizontal bars.

- Select Canvas from the dropdown menu – this will take you to your Canvas Dashboard.

- Click on Courses in the menu on the left side of the page. Click All Courses.

- You will see your courses listed here.

How do I add courses to my Canvas main menu?

- To add courses to your main menu, click on the star to the left of the course’s name from the "All Courses" page so that the star turns orange. Items on this page with orange stars will show in your main course menu – items with white stars will not.

When can I expect to see courses I am teaching in Canvas?

- Courses are placed in Canvas 90 days before the start of the next term.

For how long can I access my course content?

- As faculty: Faculty, currently teaching or employed, see and have access to all courses, past and present, that they have taught.

- As a student: Canvas courses and materials remain accessible for 60 days after the last day of the class. After the 60 day period, courses drop from view in Canvas. Students should be sure to save or download any materials needed before the end of the 60 day period.
